What is Botox?
Simply stated, Botox is a purified protein that is derived from the bacteria that produces botulinum toxin. Since there is no bacteria present in Botox, there is no possibility of botulinum infection from these injections.
How does Botox work?
Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles.
Is Botox approved by the U.S FDA?
Though Botox has been used for therapeutic reasons for over 25 years, FDA had approved the use of Botox for cosmetic purposes in 2002. Since then, over 11 million treatments have been successfully carried out.
Does Botox injection hurt?
Not at all. Very small needle is used and this is hardly perceptible. For the anxious of the patients, ice packs prior to injection is all that is needed. There is no need for topical anesthesia if used for cosmetic purposes.
How soon are the results from Botox injection seen?
It takes about 3-4 days to start seeing the difference, but the maximal effect is seen after 7-10 days.
How long does the effect of Botox injection last?
Often the effect lasts for about 3-4 months but some are satisfied for as long as 6 months.
Is there any recovery time after Botox injection?
No, there is no downtime. One may return to normal activity immediately.
Are there any side effects of Botox injection?
Occasionally there are non-specific symptoms like mild headache may occur. if post-Botox injection instructions are followed the side effects are very minimal. A small fraction of the patients may develop mild temporary drooping of eyelid, often due to unintended massaging of the area of injection.
